The Blackwall Lane Rose Garden

The Rose Garden on Blackwall Lane is a vital green space for the residents of East Greenwich. It was at risk of being sold off by the Royal Borough of Greenwich (RBG) but was saved thanks to a strong community campaign led by the East Greenwich Residents Association (EGRA) and local residents.

Community Victory

  • Council Withdrawal: The Council initially proposed selling the Rose Garden, but strong opposition led to the withdrawal of this plan.

  • Objections Submitted: 64 letters of objection were hand-delivered, in addition to many others sent by post.

  • Council Commitment: Councillor Denise Scott-McDonald assured EGRA that future public consultations will always have an email option.

Why the Rose Garden Matters

  • Lack of Green Spaces: East Greenwich has been identified as an area deficient in public green space.

  • Air Quality Benefits: The mature trees and green cover help improve air quality by capturing pollutants.

  • Community Potential: The park has the potential to become a vibrant community space with improved planting, seating, and wildlife-friendly areas.

Next Steps

  • EGRA, the council and other friends of the site recently ran a planting day to get the first stage of the rose garden up and running

  • There will be future discussions on how to make the most of the space for local people and to improve the bio diversity of the area

  • Enhancement Plans: Plans include better landscaping, new seating, and additional planting.
